Helping to make parties more sustainable

Frequently Asked Questions

This FAQ provides a general guide to the most common ways party kits operate but may not describe the specific services offered by your local party kit. Each party kit is run independently by network members, who are free to choose the level of service they offer, but all share a common goal to make reusable tableware more accessible.

  1. What items are included in a party kit?
All party kits include reusable cups and plates as a minimum. Most also offer jugs, bowls, and cutlery, and many provide serving platters, decorations, and more.

  2. How many guests does a typical party kit accommodate?
Most party kits cater to around 30 guests. Some are smaller, with 18 place settings, while others can accommodate more.

  3. How far in advance should I reserve a party kit?
We recommend contacting your local party kit 4 weeks before your event. However, if you’re short on time, it’s still worth reaching out with a last-minute request, as they may be able to help or suggest an alternative.

  4. Is there a fee to borrow the party kit?
Some party kits are lent for free or for a suggested donation to a local group, like a school PTA. Those that charge a fee usually keep it comparable to the cost of disposable items. Kits are often affordable, between 30p-£1 per guest, with some charging a refundable deposit. Some kits offer a higher level of service, which may be reflected in the price.

  5. How do I pick up and return the kit?
Each party kit listing on our website includes the available handover options. Some kits are picked up and returned to the owner’s home, some offer local delivery (usually within 5-10 miles), and others are managed from community spaces like lending libraries. Most allow multi-day hires, so you can collect the kit a day or so before the event and return it afterward.

  6. Do I need to clean the items before returning them?
About half of our members require the tableware to be washed before return. All items are dishwasher-safe, and any special instructions will be provided at booking. Most kits for 30 guests fit in a single dishwasher load, though some items, like jugs, may need handwashing. Some members also offer a washing service, either included in the hire cost or for an additional fee. Each party kit listing on our website gives information of any washing up service provided.

  7. What happens if something breaks or goes missing?
Many kits include an inventory list so you can ensure everything is returned. If an item breaks or goes missing, please inform the kit owner as soon as possible. In some cases, the cost of the item may be deducted from the deposit, or you may be asked to contribute to a replacement. For basic tableware, normally this won’t be a lot of money.

  8. Are the items in the kit safe for young children?
Most party kits offered are suitable for children’s parties. Each listing on our website includes details about the type of tableware. Kits listed as containing plastic items generally offer child-safe tableware suitable for young children.

  9. Can I customise the kit to fit my party theme?
Some members offer themed kits - this ranges from offering specific coloured tableware to bumper decoration packs. Most tableware found in party kits is either in bright rainbow colours or pastels. Some members may allow you to select specific colours to match your theme, depending on inventory availability, so do ask.

  10. How environmentally friendly is a party kit compared to disposable options?
Case studies by the Reuse Solutions Network have shown that switching to reusable tableware is more environmentally friendly in all use cases. Reusable tableware reduces single-use waste, has a lower carbon footprint, and conserves water. By sharing reusable tableware through the party kit model, we maximise the use of materials used to make reusable tableware making it even better for the planet.
